FAQ
Possible questions, answered.
Can't find what you're looking for? Send us a message — we're volunteers, but we'll get back to you.
How long is the walk?
Not too long, not too short. You can choose from a 2.5km, 5km or 10km route, each clearly marked with white, turquoise or purple signs.
What time does the walk start?
The YouMatterWalk starts at 07:00, but you can start at any time until 12:00, when the last participants set off. Groups leave every 30 minutes.
How much is a ticket?
Tickets are R90.00 per participant, sold through UPShop. One ticket is required per walker.
Can I run instead of walk?
Of course. Even though we call it a walk, you're welcome to run. There's no timing, no race numbers and no medals — just people showing up for each other.
I pre-ordered a shirt. When will I get my t-shirt?
T-shirt collection is on site before the starting point on the day of the walk. Change on site and walk in your YouMatter shirt!
Can I buy merchandise if I buy a virtual ticket?
Only if you can arrange your own courier. Send us an email and we'll arrange it with you directly.
Will there be food available?
Yes. Food stalls run by The Big Red Barn restaurant sell coffee (from 06:00), hot dogs and hamburgers. Please note that no outside food or picnic baskets are allowed on walk day.
Can I bring cash to buy food?
The venue is a cashless environment — only bank cards are accepted.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Socialised dogs on leashes are welcome. Please bring your own bags to clean up after them.
Is the walk suitable for children?
The walk is open to participants of all ages, and the 2.5km route is perfect for little legs and prams.
Will this be a depressing day talking about suicide?
No. We are celebrating life, we are celebrating hope — you matter! There is support, and you can walk through life with someone.
What if I don't want to expose my children to discussions about suicide?
Every family handles sensitive topics in their own way. We know that many children have been affected by suicide, whether through family, friends or the news. If you prefer not to attend, you can still support the cause by purchasing a virtual ticket.
Will there be counsellors on site?
The organisers are volunteers and can't provide counselling or crisis intervention, but we're happy to refer you to professional support, and some partner organisations on site may be available to talk. If you need to talk right now, SADAG's 24-hour line is 0800 567 567.
What happens to any profits of the YouMatterWalk?
All contributions and donations are managed by the Potato Foundation, a registered NGO that has implemented various community-based projects. None of the proceeds go to any of the organisers; the event is not aimed at commercial profit and merely pays for the facilities and associated event costs.
Can the YouMatterWalk be held in other cities?
The YouMatterWalk is organised by three full-time working women, each personally affected by the suicide of a loved one. Due to limited time and resources we can't organise the walk in other cities — but you're more than welcome to register and join us remotely from other towns, provinces and countries. Get a group together and walk with us, and don't forget to share your photos!
Can I get a refund?
No refund is given for a lost ticket, or for cancellation if you are unable to attend.
Where can I follow for updates?
